LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The No. 3 Bellevue University baseball team picked up a pair of victories on Sunday afternoon against Viterbo University in North Star Athletic Association action. Bellevue shutout the V-Hawks 6-0 in the opener before claiming a 5-1 win in the nightcap to take three of four in the weekend series.
With the sweep BU improves to 31-6 (10-1 North Star) while Viterbo drops to 7-23 (4-8 North Star).
The Bruins return to the diamond on Tuesday, Apr. 12 with a 3 p.m. tilt against Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa.
Game One: Bellevue 6, Viterbo 0
Braulio Torres-Perez (7-0, 1.48) threw 8.1 scoreless innings, scattering three hits to help the Bruins post a 6-0 victory over Viterbo in game one.
Joe Moran and Derik Bontempo accounted for eight of Bellevue's 10 hits on the ballgame, each going 4-for-5 in the ballgame. Moran scored three runs and Bontempo drove in four.
BU scored a pair of runs in the opening half inning with Bontempo driving in Moran and Ross Feeley with a two-run double.
The Bruins added to their lead in the fifth on an RBI-double by Trevor Jones that plated Moran to give the guests a 3-0 lead.
Bellevue held that lead until the ninth when they came through with some insurance. Jones drove in a run with a sac fly and a single by Bontempo brought two more runs in to put BU up 6-0.
Leland Tilley came on to get the final two outs and preserve the victory.
Game Two: Bellevue 5, Viterbo 1
The pitching was again strong in game two as Aaron Bain (2-0, 3.47) went the distance, yielding just one run on five hits as BU topped Viterbo 5-1 to win the series.
As was the case in the first game, Bellevue struck first. The visitors pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run single by Matt Evans that scored Trevor Jones and Ross Feeley.
BU added a run in the fifth when Jones chased in Joe Moran with a sac fly to put BU up 3-0.
Viterbo got a run back in the bottom half when Kyle Petoskey punched a single through the right side to score Sam Bachmeier.
Todd Nicks pushed the Bruin lead to 5-1 with a two-run home run in the sixth.
