BU completes series sweep over Trojans

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team used a late surge in the opener and used stellar pitching in both games to record a doubleheader sweep over visiting Dakota State University in North Star Athletic Association action Sunday afternoon at Roddy Field. The Bruins won by scores of 5-1 and 7-1 to complete the four-game series sweep.

The fourth-ranked Bruins improved to 27-5 overall and 7-0 in the NSAA. Dakota State fell to 9-16 on the season and 3-5 in league play. 

Bellevue will host Morningside College at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, in a single nine-inning non-conference contest at Westgate Field. 

Game 1: Bellevue 5, Dakota State 1

After seven scoreless innings, the Bruins exploded for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the 5-1 win in the opener. 

Braulio Torres-Perez tossed a one-hitter to improve to 6-0 on the season. He struck out six and walked two in nine-complete innings on the mound. 

The Trojans loaded the bases in the top of the second with two walks and a single and scored their only run on a fielder's choice RBI by Tyler Ratkie.

After three walks loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, the Bruins tied it a 1-1 when Todd Nicks was hit by right-handed reliever Ian Barker. BU added four more runs on an RBI single by Gabriel De La Rosa, a two-run single by Trevor Jones and on another bases-loaded hit batsmen.

After frustrating the Bruins in the first seven innings, Jaime Jorgensen was replaced in the eighth inning by Ian Barker, who suffered the loss, giving up four runs on two hits and two walks. 

Game 2: Bellevue 7, Dakota State 1

Bellevue outhit the Trojans, 9-4, and used the solid pitching of Aaron Bain en route to the 7-1 win in the nightcap.

Once again the Trojans took an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double by Jorgensen in the top of the first. 

The Bruins responded with two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single to left field by Matt Evans and on a one-run triple to right field by Joe Moran

BU made it 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single to center field by Ross Feeley. Feeley later came in to score on a passed ball.

The Bruins extended the advantage to 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth on Moran's RBI single to right field, Feeley's bases-loaded walk and on a Trojan fielding error. 

Moran finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Evans 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Feeley was 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs. 

Bain (1-0) tossed a complete-game four-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of work.
