Kevin Riley was one of the first-ever standout student-athletes for BU Hall of Fame coach and administrator Jerry Mosser. He appeared in 108 games for the Bellevue University basketball team during his 1971-75 playing career. He still ranks in the top five in school history in many statistical categories. Riley is third in single-game history with 14 free throws made against Briar Cliff University.  He is also fifth on the Bellevue University men’s basketball all-time scoring list with 1,530 career points.

Unfortunately, there were not many opportunities for honors and awards back in Riley’s playing days, and Bellevue was not part of an athletic conference.  However, Riley was well known for his work ethic, integrity, and character, setting him apart from the rest.

"He's always been willing to go out of his way to help teammates, friends, students, and teachers and is held in high esteem by everyone in the community." One former teammate even added, “I am proud to call him my friend.”

Riley earned his doctorate in education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1991 and is currently the superintendent for Gretna Public Schools, a position he has held since 1999.  He has been an employee of Gretna Public Schools since 1982 when he was named the Junior-Senior High School assistant principal. In 1985 he was named the high school principal and, in 1999, the district's superintendent.

Riley has earned numerous honors during his tenure at Gretna Public Schools. He was named the 2012 Superintendent of the Year by the Nebraska Council of School Administrators. Riley also earned the Phi Delta Kappa Outstanding Educational Leader Award in 2011, the Nebraska Association of School Administrators Region II Honor Award in 2008 and the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Volunteer Award in 2006.

He is married to his wife, Mary. His daughter is Mikaela, and her husband is Tom Vobejda. His son’s name is Thomas.  Lastly, the other important person in their household is his mother-in-law, Dorothy Randazzo, who has lived with the Riley’s for 26 years.
