No. 3 Columbia sweeps Bellevue, 3-0

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Brooke Simpson and Kelly Corkum combined for 21 kills to lead third-ranked Columbia College to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-16) sweep over Bellevue University in the final match of the Bruin/Premier Classic at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center Saturday night. 

The Bruins, who swept St. Xavier earlier in the day, fell to 23-9 on the season with the loss. Columbia improved to 24-1 overall. Sunny Bell led the Bruins with eight kills and two blocks. Sydney DeBoer added six kills on .268 hitting, while adding three blocks. 

Jordan Broady dished out 22 assists, while notching seven digs, two kills, and a service ace. 

Meghan Evans and Annie Benson paced the BU defense with eight digs apiece. 

The first set featured five ties and two lead changes with the biggest lead being five points. Bell and Symone Faulkner each had three kills in the opener. 

The Cougars used a 15-8 run and six kills from Carol Berger to propel Columbia to the 25-18 win in the second. DeBoer finished with three kills and was the only Bruin to register more than one kill in the second frame.

Columbia raced out to a 15-4 lead in the third set and the Bruins never got closer than seven points the remainder of the contest as the Cougars closed out the match with the 25-16 victory. 

Bellevue will host No. 12-ranked Grand View University at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 16) at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
