Hot-shooting Haskell defeats Bruins, 93-86

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Bellevue will have to wait for their 20th victory for another day as they dropped a tough road game on Saturday evening, 93-86, to Haskell Indian Nations University. The Bruins  fell behind by nine points in the first half but made a run at the Fightin’ Indians in the second half but fell short in conference action.

Bellevue will go to 19-7 overall and 6-4 in the conference as Haskell Indian Nations University will get to 13-14 on the season and 7-3 in the league.

After the first half, the Bruins shot 35 percent (11-of-31) but picked it up in the second half when they made their run making 17-of-27 from the field and 5-of-14 from three-point range. Down the stretch the Bruins weren’t able to convert losing to a tough Haskell team that returned two starters to the floor.

For the second straight night, Bellevue hit 11 3’s and was 19-of-26 from the free throw line for 73 percent. Haskell Indian Nations shot 61 percent for the game on 35-of-57 while connecting on 70 percent of their three-pointers, (7-of-10).

Davon White (Omaha, NE) led the Bruins with 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor including 3-of-4 from downtown. White was also 5-of-6 from the foul line grabbing 3 rebounds.  Ron King had 19 points as Jace Fredenburg had another good night from deep with 14 points, 4-of-9 3-pointers.

Kyle Prochaska and Chicago native, Jerrod Tucker, poured in double-figure with 13 and 12 points each on a combined 9-of-21 from the floor and 6-of-12 from the free throw line. Bellevue was 41 percent for the game and out-rebounded their opponent 36-27. Bellevue forced 20 turnovers and picked up 7 steals.

Dominic Tiger-Cortez led the Fightin’ Indians with 24 points off the bench on 7-of-10 while Solomon Horse-Chief had 22 in the start. DJ Fish and Dan Brown each contributed in double-figures with 14 and 13 points as they both made six field goals. Haskell was 16-of-18 at the foul line.

Bellevue will wrap up their conference and regular season schedule next week as they will host Peru State College and York College. The Bruins will welcome the Bobcats on Tuesday (Feb. 17) at 7 p.m. and the Panthers at 5 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 21). Park University will be the guest on Friday (Feb. 20) at 7 p.m. at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
