Bruins win two in first of Labor Day Classic

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University volleyball team won a pair of matches Friday at the Bruin Labor Classic, downing Dordt College, 3-1, and No. 17 Kansas Wesleyan, 3-0 , in the nightcap. 

Bellevue moves to 4-3 on the season after the two wins.

Junior Caitlyn Rueth led three Bruins in double figures with 13 kills on .400 hitting as Bellevue pulled out a 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-14, 25-23 win over Dordt in BU's opening match of the tournament. Junior Annie Benson notched a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs, to go along with three service aces. 

Freshman Symone Faulkner was the third Bruin in double figures with 10 kills.

Senior Jordan Broady directed the BU offense to a .239 hitting percentage, dishing out 45 assists, while adding seven kills, seven digs, and two blocks. 

Junior Meghan Evans led the Bruin defense with 19 digs and tied Benson with a match-high three service aces.  

The Bruins collected 10 service aces in the win and held the Crusaders to a .189 attack percentage, maintaining a 56-45 advantage in digs. 

Dordt was led by Danae Geels, who registered nine kills and five blocks in the losing effort. Kayla Gesink had 29 assists, five digs, four kills, and four blocks for DC.

Benson led the Bruins with 14 kills and six digs as the Bruins upset 17th-ranked Kanasas Wesleyan University, 3-0 (25-20, 28-26, 25-23) in the final match of the day. Rueth joined Benson in double figure with 10 kills on .292 hitting. 

Evans anchored the BU defense with 19 digs, while adding a pair of assists. Faulkner and junior rightside hitter Courtney Hendricks chipped with nine kills apiece.

Broady dished out 40 assists and added six digs, three kills, and two blocks. 

Kelsey Boyles paced KWU with 10 kills, eight digs, and four blocks. 

The Bruins return to action on Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. match against Morningside College and a 5:30 p.m. contest with Concordia (Neb.) University.
