DAVENPORT, Iowa -- An own goal in the second overtime lifted the Bellevue University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Ashford University Sunday afternoon at the Davenport Soccer Complex. With the win, the Bruins improved to 2-0 on the season while AU fell to 0-3.
The Bruins struck first off a free kick by Amy Stigge that Morgan Anderson put past Saints' goalkeeper Jerika Castillo in the 30th minute of action.
AU knotted the match at 1-1 on a goal by Chelsea Fisher in the 40th minute.
The game-winning goal came off a corner kick by Yaritza Estrada that deflected off a Saint defender and found the back of the net to put the Bruins on top for the dramatic 2-1 victory.
Bellevue out-shot Ashford 19-6 and held a commanding edge in the first half, 12-3. The Bruins also registered 13 shots on goal, while the Saints managed just four shots on frame.
The Bruins will be in action next on Friday, Sept. 9 when they make their home debut against Hastings College. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Tranquility Park.
