BU holds 18-stroke lead after opening day at NSAA Championships

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Bruin golfers occupy the top three spots on the individual leaderboard as the Bellevue University women's golf team sits 18 strokes ahead of second-place Viterbo University atop the team standings after one round of play at the North Star Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship.

Recap:

The Bruins battled through windy and cold conditions where the real feel temperature hovered around 17 degrees at times. Led by senior Allison Temple, Bellevue holds a commanding 18-stroke advantage after the opening round of play at the NSAA Championships.

Temple leads the 30-player field after firing a 4-over 76 on Monday. Her round was highlighted by sinking a 50-foot put for birdie on the 18th hole. She also had 12 pars in her opening round. 

Teammate Ilysia ibnu sits in second place at 11-over par after shooting an 83. Ibnu recorded seven pars, while collecting a birdie on the par-4, 290-yard 11th hole. 

Freshman Maria Pinedo is tied for third at 12-over par (84). Pinedo registered nine pars in her opening round of play. 

Junior Tylah Saifoloi and freshman Megan Harty both carded 13-over par 85's and are tied for sixth place. Saifoloi's round was highlighted by collecting five pars and a birdie. Harty had nine pars in her first round of play. 

Head coach Shelly Liddick was pleased with her team's performance, calling the weather conditions and frigid temperatures the worst she has ever coached or played in during her career. 

The top seven place winners after tomorrow's second round will earn first-team all-conference honors. 

The winning team will receive an automatic berth into the NAIA National Championships which will be played May 24-27 at the Lincoln Park Golf Club in Oklahoma City, Okla.
