EAST MOLINE, Ill. -- Freshman Ana Laura Gomez shot a 5-over par 77 to pace the Bellevue University women's golf team to the early lead after the first day of competition in the Ashford University Invitational Monday at the Short Hills Country Club.

The Bruins lead the field with a team score of 342, 16 shots ahead of second place Mount Mercy University. 

Gomez sits in first place in the 20-player field. Dawn Florance and Christina VonRiesen both shot 88 and are currently tied for fourth in the individual standings. Taylor Byers is tied for seventh with an 89. Jayme Harmelink shot a 96 and is tied for 13th. 

The tournament concludes on Tuesday, Oct. 18 with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
