Floro powers Bruins to sweep over Jimmies

OMAHA, Neb. -- Freshman first baseman Reese Floro went 6-for-7 on the day with three doubles, a home run, and four RBIs to power the Bellevue University softball team to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over the University of Jamestown Sunday afternoon at Roy Smith Field. The Bruins won by scores of 3-1 and 11-1 in five innings). 

The Bruins, who have now won five-straight games, improved to 13-8 on the season with the sweep. UJ fell to 14-12 overall. 

The wins over the Jimmies avenged a 4-1 loss to UJ on Feb. 19 in Aberdeen, S.D.  

The Bruins will host College of St. Mary in a single non-conference contest on Thursday, Mar. 24 beginning at 5 p.m. at Roy Smith Field.

Game 1: Bellevue 3, Jamestown 1

Lauren Jurek earned the complete-game victory and drove in a pair of runs in the Bruins' 3-1 victory in the opener. 

An RBI double to right field by Jurek gave the Bruins an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. 

Katie Cunningham launched a solo homer over the left-field fence to give BU a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jurek's line drive RBI double down the left-field line increased the advantage to 3-0 later in the fifth frame.

Back-to-back extra-base hits including an RBI double to left field by LaLa Romero sliced the BU lead to 3-1 in the top of the seventh. 

Jurek improved to 3-2 on the season, allowing six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in seven innings of work. 

Katie Merchant (5-5) suffered the loss, giving up two runs on five hits with no walks and no strikeouts in four innings in the circle.  

Game 2: Bellevue 11, Jamestown 1 (5 innings)

The Bruins scored multiple runs in three innings and pounded out 11 total hits en route to the 11-1 victory in the nightcap. 

A three-run homer to center field by Ashley Young highlighted a five-run first inning for the Bruins as BU collected five hits in the opening frame. The Bruins also scored on an RBI single to center field by Liana McMurtry and on a suicide squeeze bunt RBI by Emily Rochford

The Bruins increased the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second sparked by an RBI double to center field by Reese Floro. BU also scored after a single by Young and a throwing error by Jimmie right fielder Maddy Zander allowed Floro to score from second. 

An RBI double to left field by Katie Reisdorfer cut the BU lead to 7-1 in the top of the fourth inning. 

Bellevue used an RBI single to left field by Young to increase the margin to 8-1 in the bottom of the fourth. 

Floro ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run blast over the right-center field fence to make the final, 11-1. 

Savannah Gunn picked up the win, improving to 4-0 on the season, scattering five hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
