OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team set the school record for single-season home runs en route to a doubleheader sweep over Waldorf University Sunday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association action at Roy Smith Field. BU won by scores of 8-3 and 15-0 in five innings.
With the sweep, the Bruins improved to 35-18 on the season and 21-7 in the NSAA. BU has now won nine straight games. Waldorf dropped to 8-31 overall and 6-21 in league play.
The Bruins, who currently lead the nation in total home runs, set the school record for single-season home runs after launching six dingers in the doubleheader. BU now has 76 round-trippers this season, surpassing the previous school record of 70 home runs, set during both the 2012 and 2019 seasons.
The Bruins, who finished second in the final NSAA regular-season standings, will host the NSAA Tournament on May 6-9 at the Lied Center Softball Fields. Times and pairings will be announced later Sunday night.
Game 1: Bellevue 8, Waldorf 3
Three different Bruins launched home runs as BU pounded out 11 hits in the opener, including six extra-base hits to cruise to the 8-3 victory.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a groundout RBI by Allison O'Driscoll that scored Ellie Bliemeister from third.
Bree Hamblin tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second on a solo shot over the center-field fence.
A solo homer to left-center field by Ashley Young gave BU a 2-1 advantage in the bottom half of the second.
The Warriors responded in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to center field by Karlee Leyvas and an RBI single to center by Hamblin to give WU a 3-2 lead.
A solo bomb over the left-field fence by O'Driscoll expanded the margin to 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Two-run homers by Maricela Egan and Kelsey Arnold and a two-run double to center by Emily Rochford pushed the BU advantage to 8-3 in the bottom of the third.
Lauren Jurek improved to 17-7 on the season, allowing six hits with no walks and four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Alex Mathers (4-14) suffered the loss, scattering 11 hits with one walk and one strikeout in six innings.
Game 2: Bellevue 15, Waldorf 0 (5 innings)
Allison O'Driscoll went 4-for-4 with two home runs and six RBIs to lead the BU offense in the nightcap. BU outhit the Warriors, 15-3 in the contest. Ellie Bliemeister went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Ashley Young finished 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the victory.
An RBI single to right-center field by O'Driscoll gave BU an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
The Bruins increased the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs on a sacrifice fly to center field by Bliemeister and on RBI singles by Young and Egan, and a three-run homer by O'Driscoll.
A solo bomb by O'Driscoll over the left-field fence and a three-run dinger to center field by Bliemeister highlighted an eight-run fourth inning as BU expanded the advantage to 15-0.
Savannah Gunn earned the victory, improving to 10-6 on the season. She gave up just three hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work.
