OMAHA, Neb. -- Grace Glotfelty's walk-off two-run homer helped the Bellevue University softball team earn a non-conference doubleheader split with College of St. Mary Thursday afternoon at Roy Smith Field. The Bruins fell in the opener, 9-7, in a game that produced eight home runs. BU took the nightcap, 7-6 on Glotfelty's heroics.
With the split, the Bruins move to 20-12 on the season. CSM is now 7-14 overall.
The Bruins will head to La Crosse, Wis. this Saturday and Sunday for a four-game conference series at Viterbo University. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday's twin bill will commence at noon.
Game 1: College of St. Mary 9, Bellevue 7
The two teams combined for eight home runs as the Flames prevailed in the opener, 9-7. Fifteen of the game's 16 runs came off home runs, with five coming from the Flames.
Ellie Bliemeister led the BU offense, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.
The Flames took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer to left field by Whitney Chamberlain. A three-run homer to center field by Abby Straight, a solo shot to right center by Brittney Banks, and a two-run bomb to right field by Chamberlain pushed the Flame advantage to 8-0 in the top of the second.
A two-run homer to center field by Ellie Bliemeister cut the CSM lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the third frame.
Banks belted a solo shot over the right-center field fence to push the Flame lead to 9-2 in the top of the fourth.
A two-run blast to deep left field by Erin Sharpe brought BU to within five runs at 9-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Bruins scored an unearned run off a fielding error by first baseman Banks and another two-run shot by Bliemeister sliced the lead to 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh.
Kelsey Goodban (5-3) earned the win, giving up seven runs on eight hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.
Brieanna Brock (7-2) suffered the loss, scattering four hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Game 2: Bellevue 7, College of St. Mary 6
Trailing 6-5 in heading into the bottom of the seventh, Glotfelty launched a two-run homer over the center-field fence to give the Bruins the dramatic 7-6 victory.
Both teams had nine hits in the contest with Kaitlyn Kinman, Ashlyn Teran, and Maricela Egan all producing two hits in the victory.
An RBI single to right field by Kinman and a three-run homer to center field by Kayla Young gave BU a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
The Flames responded in the top of the fourth, tying the game on a two-run triple to center field by Ashley Trendle, an RBI double to left field by Straight, and a run-scoring single to left by Isabella Shull.
The Bruins countered in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to right field by Egan to regain the lead at 5-4.
A two-run homer to center field by Straight gave the Flames their first lead of the contest at 6-5 in the top of the sixth, setting up Glotfelty's game-winning blast in the final frame.
Sharpe (4-3) earned the victory, allowing three hits and no walks with three strikeouts in three innings of relief.
Straight (2-4) suffered the loss, scattering seven hits with four walks and nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
