ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- The Bellevue University softball team used solid pitching and timely hitting to shut out Northwestern (Iowa) College, 4-0 and 8-0, Friday night in non-conference action at the Northwestern Softball Field.
The Bruins, who have now won seven-straight games, improved to 25-8 on the season. Northwestern fell to 14-13 overall.
The Bruins return to action on Sunday, April 2, when they travel to Omaha for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at College of St. Mary.
Game 1: Bellevue 4, Northwestern 0
Neither team scored until a sacrifice fly by Sayde Woten drove in Emily Miller to give BU a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
The Bruins added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh on Hannah Carter's RBI single and a two-run homer by Maddie Siedlik to push the BU margin to 4-0.
Lexy LeCalsey (6-3) picked up her sixth win of the season, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out six Raiders in seven innings in the circle.
Kayla Tindall (8-7) was tagged with the loss, scattering five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings.
Game 2: Bellevue 8, Northwestern 0
The Bruins out-hit the Raiders, 10-2, and Kelli Fisher picked up her 15th win of the season, as BU cruised to the 8-0 win in the nightcap.
Hannah Carter (3), Erin Sharpe (2) and Sayde Woten (2) combined to drive in seven runs to pace the Bruin offense.
Bellevue gained an early 2-0 advantage on a two-run homer by Sharpe in the top of the first inning. Woten's two-run double in the top of the third doubled the BU lead to 4-0.
A bases-loaded fielding error by NWC shortstop Jensen Boger extended the lead to 5-0 in the fifth frame.
A three-run single to center field by Hannah Carter in the top of the seventh pushed the margin to 8-0.
Fisher (15-3) tossed a complete-game two-hitter, with eight strikeouts and one walk in seven innings of work.
