Bruins sweep Waldorf in conference opener, 8-3, 3-0

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team swept Waldorf College, 8-3, 3-0, Friday afternoon at Westgate Field in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Westgate Field. 

The doubleheader marked the conference openers for both teams. Bellevue improved to 12-6 on the season and 2-0 in the MCAC. Waldorf fell to 12-9 overall and 0-2 in league play. 

Game 1: Bellevue 8, Waldorf 3

Bellevue used a four-run fifth inning and Shelby Kindelin led the Bruins at the plate and in the circle as the Bruins pulled away for an 8-3 win in the opener. Bellevue blasted three home runs in the victory.

Kindelin went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. She also notched the win, improving to 4-2 on the season, allowing just one hit, while fanning two batters in three innings of work. 

Consecutive doubles by Amanda Neumann and Kelsie Bridgeford gave the Bruins an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning.

Bellevue added a three runs in the third, highlighted by a solo home run by Neumann and an RBI single by Katie Tew, to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Warriors cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth with a solo homer by Kirstin Davis and a two-run double by Kalie DePold.

The Bruins regained the momentum in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on a pair of two-run homers by Kindelin and Taylor Anderson, giving BU an 8-3 margin. 

Neumann finished 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI. 

Game 2: Bellevue 3, Waldorf 0

The Bruins scored three runs in the first inning en route to the 3-0 shutout in the nightcap. 

Taylor Mohler notched her first complete-game shutout of the season, improving to 5-3 after allowing four hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.  

Neumann drove in two runs, going 1-for-3 with a double. 

A two-run double by Neumann and an RBI double by Katie Malloy gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. That was all the offense the Bruins needed as BU won its fourth-straight game. 

Note: Due to forecasted cold and wintery weather, tomorrow's home doubleheader with Ottawa University has been canceled.
