Hot-hitting Bruins sweep York, 8-4, 7-5

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team continued its hot-hitting streak on Friday, recording a doubleheader MCAC sweep over York College, winning 8-4 and 7-5. The Bruins have collected at least 10 hits in the last five games.

Bellevue, which has won six-straight games, improved to 17-12 overall and 4-0 in the MCAC. York dropped to 3-19-1 on the season and 1-3 in league play.

The Bruins will travel to Hastings College on Wednesday (April 13) for a 4 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.

Game 1
Bellevue pounded out 14 hits and used homers by Brooke Ellis and Amanda Neumann to shoot past York, 8-4 in the opener. Ellis finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Neumann was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Melissa Ackley registered two hits, two RBIs and a double in the victory.

An RBI single to right center field by Ackley gave the Bruins a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning.

Lexi Paspalof answered with a two-run homer to left field to give York a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning.

Ellis responded with a three-run homer to left center field which gave BU a 4-2 margin in the bottom of the third inning.

York got one run back in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Riannon Romero.

An RBI single up the middle by Ellis extended the BU lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth.  A one-run double by Ackley gave BU a 6-3 edge in the fifth.

A two-run homer to left center field by Neumann pushed the lead to 8-3 in the sixth. York managed one run in the seventh on an RBI single by Yolon Alailefaleula to make the final 8-4.

Neumann got the win, improving to 12-5 on the season, scattering five hits while fanning five Panther batters. Allie Bartley recorded her first save of the season, allowing three hits and one run in one complete inning.

Game 2
After relinquishing the lead by giving up five runs in the fourth inning, Bellevue scored three runs over the fourth and fifth innings to notch the 7-5 win in the nightcap and preserve the doubleheader sweep.

The Bruins registered 10 hits in the win with Neumann, Kathryn Wardian, and Kim Wees collecting two hits apiece.

An RBI triple to left field by Neumann gave BU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Neumann scored on a throwing by Romero to make it 2-0.

The Bruins added two more runs in the second on a bases-loaded throwing error to push the lead to 4-0.

York gained the lead at 5-4 in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs, sparked by a two-run single from Brittany Shaw and RBI singles by Sarah Hansen, and Romero.

Ellis belted a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth to help the Bruins regain the lead at 6-5. BU added another run in the fifth following a throwing error by York shortstop Tristian Birch, making it 7-5.

Neumann, who replaced Bruin starter Kelly Wieczorek in the five-run fourth inning, picked up the win, allowing just one hit and striking out five batters in 3.1 innings of work.
