Bruins rebound with 2-1 win over Jamestown

PAPILLION, Neb. -- Jose-Miguel Boggio and Giovani Lima Soares scored first-half goals to lead the No. 5 Bellevue University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the University of Jamestown on Saturday afternoon.

Bellevue improves to 12-1-2 on the year, while the loss drops the Jimmies to 3-8-3.

Jamestown seemed up to the task early on, matching the Bruins step for step and taking four of the game's first five shots but it was Bellevue that struck first.

Edwin Cisneros sent a ball into the box for Boggio, who banked in a shot off a UJ defender for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Bruin lead.

Just 33 seconds later, Bellevue doubled their advantage. Ombeni Mubake took a pass in the middle of the box with his back to the goal and laid off the ball for Giovani Lima Soares, who ran onto the delivery and zipped home his second goal of the year, making it 2-0 in BU's favor.

Bellevue took that 2-0 lead into halftime, along with advantages of 8-5 in shots, 4-3 in shots on goal, and 3-1 in corners.

The Bruins kept Jamestown at arm's length for much of the second half until an 84th-minute penalty kick halved the lead. Jake Simsori converted the spot kick for the Jimmies, who had a player sent off less than 90 seconds earlier.

Jamestown had a pair of looks late with an 88th-minute free kick from Oscar Salgado that missed just inches over the crossbar and another shot from Salgado that was saved a second before time expired.

Taariq Ganga made three saves in the victory for Bellevue, while Charlie Clark totaled four stops for UJ in the loss.

The Bruins outshot Jamestown 14-9 on the day, including 6-5 on goal, and racked up an advantage of 10 corners to four.

Bellevue hosts Viterbo University on Tuesday, Oct. 22, for a 3:30 p.m. kick-off at Papillion Landing in the final regular season home game of the year.
