Bruins rout DWU, 8-1, for first win

MITCHELL, S.D. -- Behind a big offensive night the Bellevue University men's soccer team picked up their first win of the season, an 8-1 thrashing of Dakota Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening from the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex.

The Bruins scored three times in the first 45 minutes with Oumar Sissoko, Toby Millward, and Ruben Bande credited with first half goals.

Beyond the scoreline, Bellevue dominated the first half with a 16-3 advantage in shots (7-2 on goal) and 9-0 edge in corner kicks while seemingly turning possession into chances at will.

Just over five minutes into the second half, Zach Robbins stretched the Bruin lead to 4-0 before Millward added another strike in the 59th minute as the rout was on.

Capra found the back of the net again in the 69th minute before the Tigers tallied a consolation strike in the 78th minute with Cesar Requena converting a penalty kick to avoid being shutout.

Ruben Bande answered less than a minute later to restore Bellevue's six-goal cushion and Ricky Reyes completed the scoring with a long-range strike in the 89th minute.

Bellevue out-shot DWU 24-5 and 14-4 on goal for the game.

AJ Jarvis tallied three saves in goal for BU, as did Tiger keeper Hunter Birozy.

Coach Mark Heath-Preston:

"Good to get a few guys on the score sheet and some good football played. The performance was an improved one from Saturday."

Bellevue hosts Benedictine College (0-1-0) for a 7 p.m. kick-off from Papillion Landing on Saturday, Aug. 28.

Notes:

  • Toby Millward's two goals, the 31st and 32nd of his career, moved him into for sixth place in program history.
  • Alvaro Capra, who did not score in his first 16 games for BU, has now tallied five goals in the last six games dating back to last season's A.I.I. Championship Game.
