Bruins claims three major awards, nine named All-NSAA

MADISON, S.D. -- The 2016 North Star Athletic Association Men's Soccer All-Conference Teams and post-season awards were announced after the conclusion of the championship match at Collin Field in Omaha, Neb. Sunday evening.

The Bruins are 12-6-2 on the season and are currently awaiting word from the NAIA as to whether they will earn one on the at-large berths to the National Tournament. BU could also reach the National Tournament by being ranked in the Top 25 of tomorrow's Coaches Poll.

Bellevue claimed a championship double, winning both the regular-season and tournament championships. Following the team's success, the Bruins began the post-season by hauling in hardware.

BU won three of the NSAA's four major awards and landed nine on the all-conference teams. Six Bruins were named to the first team and three more were honored on the second team.

The All-NSAA First Team consists of four forwards, four midfielders, four defenders, and a goalkeeper. The Second Team also included a 13-member field.

In the major awards program, senior Daniel Coupland earned distinction as the NSAA's Defensive Player of the Year while junior Rob Smith was tabbed as the NSAA's Offensive Player of the Year. Mark Heath-Preston was selected as the NSAA Coach of the Year. Newcomer of the Year honors went to Jamestown's Nencho Margaritha.
