Bruins battle back to claim Mid-South Classic title

NEWTON, Kan. -- All five Bruin golfers shot under par to rally the Bellevue University men's golf team from an eight-stroke deficit to win their second-straight event to open the season, the Mid-South Classic at Sand Creek Station.

Recap:

Bellevue shot 9-under as a team (279) after beginning the day eight strokes behind Wayland Baptist. WBU shot a steady 4-over as a unit but with all five Bruin golfers shooting below-par rounds, Bellevue finished five strokes ahead of the Pioneers 855 to 860.

Hugo Ronnberg was the top Bruin finisher, as he tied for first after three rounds of play to force a playoff hole. Joining him in the playoff were Yong Junn (Mount Mercy) and Benjamin Lubker (Wayland Baptist) who were also 5-under for the tournament. Lubker birdied the playoff hole, No. 18, to take the individual title.

Rodrigo Navarette recorded the best Bruin round of the afternoon with a 3-under 69 to rise 16 spots from 31st to 15th overall.

Hugo Brandt climbed four spots up the leaderboard with a 2-under 70 on Wednesday to tie for fourth place. Floris-Jan Oosterhof, who matched Brandt's 2-under effort rose eight places in the standings to snag a top 10 finish.

Alex Zillig, announced as the NSAA Golfer of the Week earlier in the day, also fired a 2-under to fly 13 spots up the charts from 31st into 18th place.
