Bruins one stroke off lead at heavyweight Battle at Primm

PRIMM VALLEY, Nev. -- After a first round in which all five golfers shot par-or-better, the Bellevue University men's golf team finds itself in second place – just one stroke back – in a loaded field in the 2021 Battle at Primm.

The No. 4-ranked College of Coastal Georgia and the 10th-ranked Bruins spent Monday in a neck-and-neck battle for with the Mariners taking a one-stroke lead over the Bruins after the first round. With a team scores below 80 for both CCG (277, -11) and Bellevue (278, -10), the pairing paces six teams below par after 18 holes.

The loaded field features nine teams ranked in the NAIA Top 25, including five of the top 10, an additional four schools receiving votes in that poll, and the No. 12-ranked team in NCAA Division III.

Also firing under par rounds are #12 Texas Wesleyan University (280, -8), #19 Ottawa University-Arizona (284, -4), #1 Point University (285, -3), and lone NCAA representative #12 McMurry (286, -2).

Coastal Georgia's Chip Thompson (-6) holds a one shot lead of McMurry's Lane Roye (-5), 66-to-67 in the individual standings.

Bellevue's Rodrigo Navarrete is among five golfers tied for third following his opening round 4-under 68.

Three Bruins are tied for 12th with first round 70s. Baptiste Bonnet, Alex Zillig, and Hugo Ronnberg each checked in at 2-under. Andre Becerra, BU's fifth scoring golfer, finished the round at even-par (72) and is tied for 23rd overall.

Navarrete led the Bruins with seven birdies in the round and BU tallied 20 birdies as a team. Bonnet notched the Bellevue's lone eagle on the day, doing so on the 575-yard par-5 13th hole.

Golfing as an individual, Hugo Brandt recorded a first round 79 (+7).
