Bruins climb to third with 7-under round

NEWTON, Kan. -- Behind a 7-under final round, the Bellevue University men's golf team climbed two spots to finish in third place at the Mid-South Classic, hosted by Grand View University at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

Tournament Field:

The tournament field featured six nationally ranked teams – No. 3 Oklahoma City, No. 11 Wayland Baptist, No. 13 Johnson & Wales, No. 16 Missouri Valley, No. 19 Kansas Wesleyan, and No. 21 Bellevue – along with two others that were receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll in Grand View and Mount Mercy.

Team Recap:

Bellevue entered the day in fifth place but were able to vault past Missouri Valley and Johnson & Wales into third, finishing just one stroke back of second place Oklahoma City.

The Bruins opened tournament strong, turning, in an even-par first round (288) to hold the team lead through 18 holes. However, no BU golfers were able to match their first round success as all five scorers turned in over-par scorecards as Bellevue slid four spots in the standings.

In the third, and final, round Bellevue matched their single-round best with a score of 281 and set a new season-best mark by firing a 7-under round as a team with three golfers finishing the round under par.

Wayland Baptist took home the team title with a 54-hole score of 851 (-13), by a comfortable 21 strokes over second place Oklahoma City with Bellevue finishing in third. Missouri Valley and Johnson & Wales checked in at fourth and fifth.

Individual Recap:

Alex Zillig was the Bruins' top finisher with a score of even-par (216) for the tournament, including a 4-under round on Tuesday to see him rise 12 spots in the individual standings to tie for fifth place.

Cameron Lampe and Andre Becerra were among four golfers that tied for 14th place at 4-over for the event. Lampe opened with a first round even-par 72 and closed with a 1-under final round while Becerra played a consistent three rounds, shooting 2-over in the first round before closing with consecutive 1-over rounds.

Floris-Jan Oosterhof accounted for the fourth Bruin in the top-20 with a 6-over tournament score of 222. After carding a 2-under first round, he suffered a second round setback before closing with a 2-over final round.

The Bruins' final golfer Tobias Santillan Tambosco had a tough go of things on Monday, exiting the day at 13-over but registered a 3-under final round to vault 23 places up the leaderboard into a tie for 28th place.

Johannes Hounsgaard (Wayland Baptist) took home the individual title with three below-par rounds to finish at 7-under with a score of 209. He beat out David Meyeres (Oklahoma City) and Nicolas Evangelio (Missouri Valley) who finished in a tie for second at 3-under (213).
