OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Led by Fernando Arzate and Andre Becerra, the Bellevue University men's golf team improved its opening-round score by six strokes, to finish in third place in the season-opening 15-team Southwestern Christian Fall Invite Wednesday afternoon at Lake Hefner Golf Club.
The Bruins finished the second round with an even-par team total of 288, to go along with an opening round 294 for a 6-over-par 36-hole total of 582 (294-288). Kansas Wesleyan won the tournament with a 1-over-par 577 (294-283) team total. St. Gregory's finished one stroke ahead of the Bruins at 581 (299-282). SGU shot the top team total on the day.
Arzate shot the Bruins' top round on the day with a 3-under 69 to finish in a tie for second at 1-under 143 (74-69). Becerra also finished at 1-under 143 after firing a 2-under 70 Wednesday to go along with Tuesday's 1-over 73. Juan Gomez finished the tournament at even-par 144 (71-73), good for a tie for fifth place. Lautaro Marzilio shot identical rounds of 4-over 76 to finish in a tie for 28th in the 86-player field.
KWU's Ben Hadden was the individual medalist with an 8-under total of 136 (67-69).
The Bruins will compete in the U.C. Ferguson Classic on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 11-12 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
