Bruins rest in 23rd after second round at Nationals

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- For the second time in as many days, the Bellevue University men's golf team saw their team leader shoot even-par. Senior Jose Vega recorded a second round 72 and the Bruins currently sit in 23rd place after 36 holes of competition at the 29-team NAIA Men's Golf National Championships being played at the LPGA International Hills Golf Course.

The Bruins shot a team score of 18-over par 304 on the 6,947-yard, par-72 course.

Over half of the tournament field was unable to complete Wednesday's second round as play was suspended due to lightning and thunderstorms in the area. Eighty players were still on the course when play was suspended at 5 p.m. eastern time. Play will resume at 8 a.m. on Thursday. 

Coastal Georgia currently leads the field with a team score of 6-under par. Two Mariners completed 12 holes while the remaining three finished 15 holes. 

After recording a 3-over 75 in Tuesday's opening round, Vega shot 72 today for a score of 3-over par 147 and is currently tied for 37th place in the individual standings.

Sophomore Diego Gudino followed up an even-par day Tuesday with a 76 in the second round to sit just a stroke behind Vega and in a tie for 52nd place. Sophomore Juan Gomez carded a second round 76 for a 36-hole total of 157 and is now tied for 119th.

Junior Mike Hannon is tied for 134th with a two-round score of 160 after shooting 80 for the second day in a row. Classmate Tomas Ovejero shot 89 today and has recorded a score of 172 through the first two rounds.

Dalton State's Sean Elliott and Marian's Clayton French are tied for the individual lead at 6-under par. Neither player, however, was able to complete Wednesday's second round. 

The 72-hole tournament runs through Friday, May 22.
