Garner, Bruins finish in fifth place at NAIA Championships

SALEM, Ore. -- The Bellevue University men's golf team finished in fifth place overall in the fourth and final round of the NAIA Men's Golf National Championships Friday at the Creekside Golf Club.

Bellevue fired its lowest round of the tournament with a team total of 291. The Bruins recorded 17 birdies and an eagle by John Matthews on the day.

Oklahoma City University won its second-straight title and ninth men's golf championship in the last 12 years. The Stars finished the four-day tournament at four-under-par, 20 strokes ahead of second place Texas Wesleyan University.

OCU's Sondre Ronold also captured the individual title finishing the golf championship with a total score of 283 (-5).

The Bruins were led by Davis Garner who placed fifth overall after firing a one-under-par final round score of 71 with five birdies. He ended the tournament with a 72-hole total of 288.

Jose Vega, who also registered five birdies in the final round, recorded a three-under-par score of 69 and tied for seventh place.

Matthews (72-79-79-75) ended the tournament in a tie for 52nd after notching a total score of 305.

Other Bruin golfers included Tomas Ovejero (308) and Mike Hannon (312) who both registered rounds of 76.
