OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Led by John Matthews 7-under par two-day total of 137, the Bellevue University men's golf team finished in third place at the season-opening Southwestern Christian Fall Invitational Tuesday at the Lake Hefner Golf Course.
The Bruins' team total of 16-under par, 560, was a two-round school record, as was Matthews' two-day score of 137.
Oklahoma Baptist won the team championship with a 31-under par score of 545. OBU edged Southern Nazarene's two-round total of 546.
Three Bruins finished the tournament under par. Jose Vega shot a school-record 7-under par 65 and finished 6-under par for the tournament. Taylor Sundom fired a 3-under par 69 on the day and finished 3-under for the tournament. Mike Hannon and Jeff Shermoen each finished the tournament at 3-over par.
Oklahoma Baptist's Todd Balkin was the tournament medalist with a 14-under total of 130, including a 10-under par 62 on today's round. Matthews finished in a tie for fourth place and Vega was tied for eighth.
