Bruins stay perfect in NSAA with 74-56 win over Waldorf

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Four Bruins scored in double figures as the Bellevue University men's basketball team remained unbeaten in league play with a 74-56 victory over Waldorf University Saturday evening in North Star Athletic Association play at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. 

With the victory, Bellevue improved to 16-6 overall and 6-0 in the NSAA. Waldorf dropped to 6-14 on the season and 3-4 in league play.  

Niamey Harris led the Bruins with 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Lewis Hayes added 14 points, seven boards, and four blocked shots. Jaylen Wiltz contributed with 12 points and five assists. Connor Dukes was the fourth Bruin in double figures, finishing with 11 points, to go along with three steals and a pair of rebounds. 

Demetrius Martin led all players with 20 points. He also added four rebounds and two assists. 

Capped by a 3-pointer from Wiltz, the Bruins raced out to a 21-11 lead and extended the margin 17 points following five-straight points from Harris and another 3-pointer from Wiltz, giving BU a 29-17 advantage with just under five minutes left before halftime.  

The two teams traded baskets the remainder of the half until a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Dukes gave the Bruins a 35-17 advantage at the intermission. 

Wiltz led the Bruins in the first half with 12 points, a pair of rebounds, and two assists. Harris added eight points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

Martin paced the WU offense in the opening half with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field. 

The Warriors scored the first four points of the second half and after a Martin layup made it a 12-point (41-29) game, the Bruins used a 10-4 run to grab a 51-33 lead midway through the second half. 

A 3-pointer by Brady Kuchinka drew the Warriors to within single digits at 51-43 with eight minutes remaining in the contest.  

After the Warriors got as close as seven points, the Bruins scored 11-consecutive points over a three-minute span to restore command of the contest with an 18-point margin (63-45) at the 3:47 mark.  

Waldorf never got closer than 16 points the remainder of the contest as BU secured the 74-56 victory to remain unscathed in league play.   

Bellevue and Waldorf will face off again next Friday, Jan. 31 when the Bruins travel to Forest City, Iowa for a 7:30 p.m. contest at WU.
