Bruins knock off York, 75-69

YORK, Neb -- Lewis Hayes led four Bruins in double figures as the No. 22-ranked Bellevue University men's basketball team defeated rival York College 75-69 on Friday evening at York's Freeman Center.

The teams traded points in the early going, with neither side grabbing a two-possession lead until Victor Lewis hit a jumper with 13:47 to play that gave the Panthers a 13-9 lead.

Bellevue answered back by scoring seven-straight points in just 1:21 of game time to take a three-point lead, 16-13.

Lewis again gave York a four-point lead on a bucket with 9:02 to play, prompting a BU timeout with 8:51 remaining in the opening half. The Bruins scored nine of the next 10 points out of the timeout to go up 28-24 on a jumper from Jemeil King at the 6:32 mark.

York stayed close but was unable to regain the lead as Bellevue took a 35-33 advantage into the locker room.

Lance Ewell gave York their first lead of the second half, knocking down a jumper with 15:44 to play to put the Panthers ahead 42-41.

The lead swelled to four points, 47-43, on a three-pointer from Eric Fox.

The teams traded leads until Vaj Rice put the Bruins ahead for good on a jumper with 7:06 to play, which sparked a 10-0 scoring run, that saw Bellevue grab a 69-60 lead. Hayes capped the run with a basket at the 2:29 mark.

Following Eric Lenear's jumper at the 7:35 mark, York went scoreless over the next 6:05 as BU seized control of the game.

BU out-shot York 51 to 44.8 percent and converted on six of their final 10 free throw attempts in the final minute to seal their first road win of the season.

The Bruins dominated inside, out-scoring the host side 42-30 in points in the paint.

York used a 13-0 advantage in second chance points to hang around as the Panthers piled up an 8-5 advantage on the offensive glass.

Hayes was joined in double figures by King (15), Niamey Harris (13), and Amenofis Mitchell (11).

King led all players with eight rebounds to go along with a team-high four assists and a pair of steals.

Lenear paced York with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Tyreece Berry added 13 points in support.
