Bruins earn five MCAC awards

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University basketball team took home five awards on Wednesday night when the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference announced their All-Conference Team and major award winners.

Senior Percy Lemle (Carson, Calif.) and junior Taylor Young (Hawthorne, Calif.) were each named to the 10-man all-MCAC team while Lemle was also recognized as the MCAC's co-Newcomer of the Year, along with Alonzo Stafford of Central Christian College. Seniors Thomas Hammock (Compton, Calif.) and Alex Worthen-Harris (Phoenix, Ariz.) were each named to the 13-member Honorable Mention All-MCAC team.

Lemle has had a spectacular year by any standard as he's currently second on the team in scoring at 15.9 points per game, third in rebounding (4.6 rpg), first in assists (100), and tied for first in both blocked shots (23) and steals (26). He's connected on 45.6 percent of his field goal attempts this season while his 161 made free throws are easily tops on the club. In a balanced offensive system Lemle has scored at least 20 points in a game eight times, including going for a career-high 34 in a 90-86 victory over York College on Jan. 17.

Young, after an early season bout with the injury bug has come on strong for the Bruins. He leads the team in scoring (16.5 ppg), free throw percentage (84.5%), and assists per game (3.8) while shooting 50.2 percent from the field and pulling down 3.1 rebounds per game. In 22 games played on the season, Young has only been held to single digit scoring efforts in three contests and has gone for 20 or more on eight occasions.

Hammock has been a consistent threat on the perimeter for the Bruins, once again, this season as he leads the team in three point shooting percentage (41.3%) to go along with his 9.4 point per game scoring average. He's drained 83 trifectas on the season which ranks 21st nationally while his 2.77 threes made per game ranks 29 in the country. Hammock has hit multiple three pointers in 23 of the Bruins' 30 games this season, including a staggering five or more on six separate occasions. His 197 career three pointers ranks third in program history and first among two-year players.

Worthen-Harris has been a strong performer for the Bruins throughout the year but has really come on strong of late with tremendous all-around play. Worthen-Harris is shooting a healthy 55.1 percent from the field as he ranks third on the team in scoring at 10.8 points per game and is tied with Lemle for the team lead in both steals (26) and blocked shots (23). His 5.9 rebounds per game are easily tops on the team as he's twice hit double figures in rebounds. He's scored in double figures in 18 games this season including career-best 20-point efforts against Dakota State on Dec. 30 and against Haskell Indian Nations on Jan. 31.

Bellevue is currently 25-5 on the season after winning their last three games to claim a share of the MCAC Regular Season championship with an 11-3 record in league play. The Bruins host the MCAC North Division Tournament this weekend. Waldorf College will play Haskell Indian Nations University at 5:00 p.m. on Friday while Bellevue will host York College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two winners will meet at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday to determine who will advance to the conference championship game on Tuesday night.
