Bellevue takes down Indians, 81-60

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Junior James Parrott led five Bruins in double figures with 19 points as the seventh-ranked Bellevue University men's basketball team defeated Haskell Indian Nations University, 81-60, Saturday night in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.

Bellevue won its 12th-straight game, improving to 19-4 on the season and 7-0 in the MCAC. Haskell dropped to 8-14 overall and 2-5 in league action. 

Parrott added eight rebounds and three assists in the win. Richard Shepherd and Austin Bowen chipped in 13 points apiece. Ousseynou Diop recorded his team-leading sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with four blocked shots. Jeremy Arrington was the fifth Bruin in double figures, finishing with 11 points. 

Curtis Houle connected on six second-half 3-pointers, leading the Indians with 20 points, all in the second half.

Bellevue held the league's leading scorer Brady Fairbanks to a season-low two points. Fairbanks was averaging 20.5 points per game.

Paced by six early points apiece from Diop and Shepherd, the Bruins raced out to a 16-3 lead in the first seven minutes of the game. 

Bellevue used an 8-0 run to extend the margin to 26-8 at the midway point of the first half. 

The Bruins closed the half on a 24-10 surge, limiting the Indians to 24.1 percent shooting in the first period as the Bruins grabbed a 48-20 lead at the intermission. 

Parrott led BU in the opening half with nine points and four rebounds as six Bruins scored at least six points in the first 20 minutes. 

After the two teams traded baskets in the early portion of the second half, Bellevue used a 15-5 run to grab a 71-34 lead with 12:43 remaining in the game.

Houle's fifth 3-pointer of the second half highlighted a nine-point Indian run, pulling Haskell to within 28 points (71-43) at the 11-minute mark. Haskell hit 10 second-half 3-pointers, outscoring the Bruins 40-33, to cut the final margin to 21 points at 81-60.

Bellevue shot 49.2 percent in the contest, while Haskell connected at a 33.3 percent clip. The Indians, however, were 38.7 percent from behind the arc.

The Bruins travel to McPherson, Kan. next Friday, Feb. 3, for a 7:30 p.m. MCAC contest at Central Christian College.
