BU pulls away from Bobcats in second half, 78-64

PERU, Neb. -- Forwards Eugene Bain and Ousseynou Diop combined for 34 points and 24 rebounds to help lead the Bellevue University men's basketball team to a 78-64 win at Peru State College Tuesday night in MCAC action.  

Bellevue improves to 21-5 overall and 8-2 in the MCAC while Peru State falls to 6-19 and 2-8 in league play. 

Bain recorded 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds while Diop registered 14 points, 16 rebounds and tied a career-high with eight blocked shots. Jelani Johnson added 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Jeremy Cruise also chipped in 11 points and was 3-of-5 from long distance.

PSC was led by Jacob Schaben and Devin Eighmey who each scored 13 points apiece.

A 14-9 BU run midway through the first half gave the Bruins their biggest lead of the period, 26-16, with 9:29 remaining in the opening stanza before PSC ended the half on an 18-8 spurt in the final 6:52 to take a two-point lead into intermission, 39-37.

The Bruins were 44.1 percent from the field while PSC shot 45.7 percent and connected on 4-of-9 three-point attempts (44.4 percent). Bain led the Bruins with 12 points and five rebounds in the period while Diop added six points, three rebounds and five blocked shots. The Bobcats were led by Derrick Williams' nine points.

BU used a 12-5 run early in the second half to regain the lead, 51-47. After PSC cut the Bruins' lead down to two, 53-51, BU scored 10 of the next 14 points to take an eight-point lead, 63-55, with 8:40 remaining. Once again, PSC responded with a 7-0 run to cut BU's lead down to one with 6:21 left, but the Bobcats never got any closer as the Bruins pulled away for the 14-point victory.

Bain, Cruise and Diop each recorded eight points in the second period to pace the Bruins. Diop also added eight rebounds.

BU shot 42.4 percent from the field and held PSC to 40.6 percent shooting, including just 34.5 percent in the second half. The Bruins dominated the glass, outrebounding the Bobcats 46-29 and also had a 20-11 edge in offensive rebounds.

The Bruins will return home on Friday, Feb. 11 when they welcome the York College Panthers to the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
