Striking Out Cancer on Payton's Day Flyer

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball will host their inaugural Striking Out Cancer on Payton's Day this Friday, Apr. 5 when they host Peru State College in a noon double-header at John Stella Field at Brown Park.

Looking for a way to honor the legacy of Bruin alum Payton Higgins, who passed away last June. As such, the BU baseball team is beginning a scholarship drive with all of the proceeds benefitting the Payton Higgins Memorial Scholarship.

Higgins, a three-year member of the Bellevue program and a starter on the 2021 team that came within a game of the Avista NAIA World Series. After being diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2021, Higgins bravely battled the disease following a rigorous treatment regime.

He was able to partake in Senior Day ceremonies the following spring and played in all four games of BU's series against Presentation. His brave battle was recognized across the conference and country as he earned Player of the Week awards from both the NSAA conference and NAIA National offices.

Coach Duane Monlux today announced a change to this weekend's series with the Bobcats. In anticipation of inclement weather, the Bruins (23-10) will now host the Peru State (11-22) on Friday afternoon for a double-header beginning at noon. Both games will be nine innings.

Bellevue has been playing some of their best ball of late, winning 12 of their last 13 and 17 of 20 overall.
