Bruins snap No. 12 Jimmies' streak; second game postponed

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team opened conference play Saturday by snapping 12th-ranked University of Jamestown's 13-game winning streak with a decisive 10-3 victory over the Jimmies on a cold, wet day at Brown Park. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to wet and cold field conditions. The two teams will play a tripleheader on Sunday, with three seven-inning contests beginning at noon at Brown Park. 

Bellevue improved to 12-13 on the season and 1-0 in the NSAA. Jamestown fell to 23-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. 

Austin Alexander went 4-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs to pace the Bruin offense. Kory Longaker finished 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI as BU outhit the Jimmies 10 to 8. Riley Baasch went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. 

The Jimmies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a ground-out RBI by Pete Pennylegi that scored Quinn Irey from third and they increased the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homer by Irey. 

An RBI double to center field by Longaker sliced the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth. The Bruins took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth on a solo homer by Alexander and an RBI single by Baasch.   

BU erupted for seven runs over the seventh and eighth innings to push the margin to 10-2. The seventh inning was highlighted by Travis Tanaka's RBI double to center field, a run-scoring single Alexander and a two-run homer by Baasch. 

Alexander blasted a three-run homer to extend the Bruin advantage to eight runs. 

The Jimmies got one run back in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Tanner Roundy to make the final, 10-3. 

Stephen Knapp (3-0) earned the win, allowing five hits with one walk and four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
