Bruins breeze to sweep over Winnipeg, 24-0, 8-2

OMAHA, Neb. -- The 19th-ranked Bellevue University baseball team blasted 35 hits on the day, cruising to a doubleheader non-conference sweep over the University of Winnipeg, 24-2, 8-0, Friday afternoon at Westgate Field. 

The two teams will conclude the four-game series on Saturday (April 12) with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Westgate Field. 

Bellevue improved to 24-13-2 with the sweep. Winnipeg dropped to 1-20 on the season. 

Game 1: Bellevue 24, Winnipeg 0

Bellevue pounded out a season-high 22 hits as seven Bruins had multiple hits en route to BU's 24-0 shutout victory over Winnipeg in the opener. 

Kyle Kinman and Galli Cribbs combined for 11 RBIs as all nine starters recorded at least one hit in the victory. 

Kinman went 3-for-5 with six RBIs, three runs scored, two triples and a double. Cribbs finished 4-for-4 with five RBIs, three runs scored, two doubles and a triple. 

A sacrifice fly to left field by Kinman gave the Bruins an early 1-0 lead in the botom of the first inning. 

The Bruins batted through the order in the second, scoring six runs on six hits, highlighted by a two-run triple by Kinman, a two-run double by Charlie Krueger and an RBI double by Levi Cartas

Bellevue added four runs in the third with a two-run triple by Cribbs, a one-run triple by Kinman and an RBI single by Nate Mullins, extending the BU advantage to 11-0. 

Bryce Kelly's RBI single gave the Bruins a 12-0 margin in the bottom of the fourth frame. 

Bellevue batted through the lineup again in the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits, getting RBIs from Cartas, Brasher, Clark, and Cribbs. 

For the third time, the Bruins batted through the order, plating seven runs in the sixth on four hits, sparked by two-run doubles by Kinman and Kelly and a two-run single by Clark. 

Ricky Holm (6-1) recorded the victory, allowing just one hit while striking out six batters, gaining his team-leading sixth win of the season. 

Game 2: Bellevue 8, Winnipeg 2

Devin Ferguson and Krueger each belted two home runs as the Bruins hit five total homers in the 8-2 win in the nightcap.  

Ferguson finished 2-for-3, with two home runs and three RBIs. Krueger went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two home runs. 

Kinman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a home run and a triple for the BU offense. 

Bellevue outhit the Wesmen, 13-3, in the victory.

Winnipeg scored its first run of the afternoon on a bases-loaded wild pitch to give the Wesmen a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. 

The Bruins took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single up the middle by Cribbs and a one-run triple to center field by Kinman. 

A two-run homer to center field by Ferguson extended the BU lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning. 

Solo homers by Kinman, Krueger, and Ferguson pushed the Bellevue advantage to 7-1 in the fifth. 

The Wesmen picked up a run in top of the sixth when Tyler Kemball scored from third on a wild pitch from BU starter Brennan Henry

Krueger's second solo homer pushed the BU advantage to 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth. 

Henry (5-2) earned the win, allowing just three hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts in six innings of work.
