In the Bellevue University baseball game against Briar Cliff University on April 28, the Bruins helped raise more than $1,000 as part of its annual cancer awareness fundraiser known as "Striking out Cancer on Tanner's Day" at Werner Park.

"The turnout for Tanner's Day was outstanding," said head baseball coach Duane Monlux. "The weather at Werner Park for the game was terrific and it was a great day for baseball and supporting a great cause. We hope to keep building this event each year."

The first pitch was also thrown out by Nolan Zikas, a Papillion teenager battling bone cancer.

All proceeds from the game, which was won by Bellevue, 4-1, were donated to CureSearch.

In addition to the money raised at the baseball game, two anonymous private donations totaling $7,500 were made directly to CureSearch. These two donations have been made every year that Bellevue has held "Tanner's Day."

The mission of CureSearch is to fund and support targeted and innovative children's cancer research with measurable results, and be the authoritative source of information and resources for all those affected by children's cancer.
