Bruins shut out Waldorf, 3-0, 7-0; Run streak to 18 games

OMAHA, Neb. -- The 12th-ranked Bellevue University baseball team used strong pitching performances from Ricky Holm and Kody McFarland to shut out Waldorf College, 3-0 and 7-0 Friday afternoon at Westgate Field in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action. 

Bellevue, which has now won 18-straight games, improved to 24-4-1 on the season and 8-0 in the MCAC. Waldorf dropped to 5-20 overall and 0-6 in league play.

The Bruins will travel to Sioux City, Iowa on Tuesday, April 2, for a single nine-inning contest at Briar Cliff University beginning at 3 p.m.

Game 1: Bellevue 3, Waldorf 0

Holm (5-0) tossed a three-hit complete-game shutout as the Bruins took the opener, 3-0. Holm fanned 13 batters while not allowing a walk in nine innings on the mound.  

A bases-loaded balk gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Neither team scored again until Dusty Kerns' RBI triple gave BU a 2-0 lead in the fifth frame. 

Bryce Kelly's RBI single moved the Bruin advantage to 3-0 in the bottom of the eighth.

Bellevue outhit the Warriors 10-3, with Andy Smolinski leading the way with a pair of hits and two walks.

Game 2: Bellevue 7, Waldorf 0

McFarland (3-1) allowed just two hits, while equalling Holm with 13 strikeouts in seven innings as Bellevue registered its fourth shutout of the season in the 7-0 victory. It was McFarland's second shutout of the season. 

A groundout RBI by Smolinski gave BU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. A two-run single by Beau Dahmen gave BU a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. 

A two-run double by Brian Embery and a pair of groundout RBIs extended the Bruin lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
