Chris Ashanti enters his first season under Bruin head coach Shane Paben in 2017-18. The Compton, Calif. native was a four-year varsity player at David Starr Jordan High School in Los Angeles, Calif. After graduating high school, Ashanti spent two years as a student-athlete at Fresno City College and then earned an athletic scholarship to Lewis-Clark State College. After a year at LCSC, Ashanti transferred to Bellevue University to finish his college career where he helped the Bruins back to the National Tournament and their seventh-straight conference championship.

During his two years at Fresno City, Ashanti helped lead his team to back-to-back Central Valley Conference Championships. As team captain his sophomore year he led Fresno to a 30-3 record and an Elite Eight berth in the playoffs. His accolades were Central Valley Conference MVP, first team all-conference, and first team all-state.

During his senior campaign, Ashanti helped the Bruins to an NAIA Division II National Tournament appearance. In his lone season as a student-athlete with the Bruins, Ashanti averaged 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He shot 75.9 percent from the free throw line and averaged better than an assist per game.

Ashanti received his bachelor's degree in sociology from Bellevue in 2016.
