
MADISON, S.D. -- Sophomores Sierra Athen and Olivia Galas were both honored today with weekly North Star Athletic Association volleyball honors in an announcement made today by the league office. Athen was named the NSAA Attacker of the Week, while Galas picked up her third-consecutive NSAA Setter of the Week nod.
Both players helped the Bruins to a perfect 4-0 record at the 25-team GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic held in Bellevue. The Bruins were one of just two teams in the tournament to go undefeated. Seventh-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) College finished 3-0 in the tournament.
Athen collected four-straight double-doubles in BU's four victories. She averaged 4.00 kills and 3.80 digs per set while also adding nine service aces, four blocks, and five assists. In the Bruins' opening match of the tournament, Athen pounded 12 kills on 20 errorless swings, while adding 18 digs and three service aces. She produced 15 kills, 12 digs, and a pair of blocks in BU's four-game victory over Westmont.
Athen capped off the tournament with a season-high 19 kills along with 16 digs and two service aces in the Bruins' five-set win over Carroll College.
Athen currently leads BU with 137 kills and is second with 111 digs and 13 service aces.
Galas produced two double-doubles in BU's four wins, averaging 11.07 assists and 1.87 digs per set. She added 13 kills, five blocks, and four service aces on the week.
Galas finished with 48 assists and 11 digs in the Bruins' four-game win over Westmont. She dished out 50 assists along with 11 digs and a pair of service aces in BU's five-set win over Carroll in the tournament finale.
Galas currently leads the NSAA with 10.29 assists per set. She is third on the team in service aces with nine.
The 22nd-ranked Bruins (9-2) will travel to Point Lookout, Mo. this Thursday, Sept. 5 for a 6 p.m. match at College of the Ozarks.
