Scanlan named 2nd team All-American; Galas nets HM honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Senior rightside hitter Shayla Scanlan capped off her stellar four-year Bruin career by being named a second-team NAIA All-American in an announcement made today by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). She also earned the same honor from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). 

In addition, freshman setter Olivia Galas garnered honorable mention All-American accolades by both entities. The All-American teams were selected by the NAIA Volleyball All-America Selection Committee. This committee is made up of NAIA-AVCA officers and the championship committee. 

Scanlan, who is a four-time all-NSAA and all-Region honoree, earned her third All-American honor of her career after being named to the third team in 2017 and garnering honorable mention recognition as a sophomore. Scanlan was named the NSAA Attacker of the Week twice in 2018. She led this year's team with 108 total blocks and a .263 hitting percentage. Scanlan was third on the squad with 344 kills and finished her BU career ranked second in school history with 1,612 career kills. Her attack percentage ranked fifth in the final conference statistics, while her block total ranked sixth. She registered double-figure kill totals in 17 matches this season. 

Galas was a six-time NSAA Setter of the Week pick in 2018 and ranked fourth nationally with 1,396 total assists and sixth with 10.82 assists per game. She recorded a team-leading 11 double-doubles on the season. Galas, who was third on the team with 287 digs, was named the NAIA National Setter of the Week on Oct. 2 after averaging 14.43 assists per set while adding 14 digs to go along with eight kills in BU's wins over Mayville State and Presentation. Galas earned first team all-NSAA and all-Region honors this season. In addition, she was named the NSAA Setter of the Year and Newcomer of the Year as well as being named a first-team all-Region selection and the North Central Region Freshman of the Year. 

The Bruins finished the 2018 season with a 23-12 overall record, advancing to the NAIA National Tournament for the third-straight season and the 11th time in school history.
