Galas, Scanlan earn all-Region honors; Galas Freshman of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Freshman setter Olivia Galas and senior rightside hitter Shayla Scanlan were both honored Thursday with first-team all-North Central Region honors in an announcement made by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).  In addition, Galas was named the Region Freshman of the Year, while freshman Madi Evans earned honorable mention all-Region accolades. 

The North Central Region is composed of member schools in the North Star Athletic Association and the NAIA Association of Independent Institutions.

Galas was a six-time NSAA Setter of the Week pick in 2018 and ranked fourth nationally with 1,396 total assists and sixth with 10.82 assists per game. She recorded a team-leading 11 double-doubles on the season. Galas, who was third on the team with 287 digs, was named the NAIA National Setter of the Week on Oct. 2 after averaging 14.43 assists per set while adding 14 digs to go along with eight kills in BU's wins over Mayville State and Presentation. 

Scanlan, who earned her fourth-straight all-Region honor as well as her fourth-consecutive all-NSAA nod earlier this season, was named the NSAA Attacker of the Week twice in 2018. She led this year's team with 108 total blocks and a .263 hitting percentage. Scanlan was third on the squad with 344 kills and finished her BU career ranked second in school history with 1,612 career kills. Her attack percentage ranked fifth in the final conference statistics, while her block total ranked sixth. She registered double-figure kill totals in 17 matches this season. 

A first-team all-NSAA selection, Evans led the 2018 Bruins with 580 digs and finished second with 93 set assists.  She tied for third with 17 service aces. Evans, who earned NSAA Defender of the Week honors on Oct. 22, ranks 15th in school history with her 580 digs this season. She recorded a career-high 35 digs in BU's five-set win at Mayville State on Oct. 19.  

The Bruins finished the 2018 season with a 23-12 overall record, advancing to the NAIA National Tournament for the third-straight season and the 11th time in school history.
