BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The 21st-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team opened North Star Athletic Association play Wednesday night with a 3-0 (30-28, 25-11, 25-19) win over Waldorf University at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
The Bruins improved to 11-3 on the season and 1-0 in the NSAA. Waldorf dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Mikaylah Gillespie led the BU offense with eight kills on .294 hitting while adding three blocks. Shayla Scanlan hit .333 with seven kills and a match-high seven blocks.
Maddie Squiers had a solid performance with 30 assists, nine digs, seven kills on 11 errorless swings and a pair of service aces.
Cheyenne Mahnke anchored the Bruin defense with 13 digs, while adding three assists and a service ace.
Kyra Platzek led the Warriors with nine kills and two digs.
The Bruins saved two set points in the opener, while finally converting on their fourth chance with a kill by Rachel Wald to pull out the marathon 30-28 win in the first set. BU hit just .037 in the first stanza, committing 12 attack errors.
Bellevue hit .360 in the second set while cruising to the 25-11 victory. The BU defense held the Warriors to a -.037 hitting clip in the second.
The Bruins used a 6-0 run early in the third set before securing the sweep with the 25-19 win.
Bellevue will be back in action tomorrow night (Sept. 14) when they host Dakota State University in an NSAA matchup beginning at 7 p.m. in the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
