LEXINGTON, KY. -- Freshman setter Maddie Squiers, sophomore rightside hitter Shayla Scanlan and junior middle blocker Mikaylah Gillespie were named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NAIA All-Americans in an announcement made today by the AVCA. The All-American teams were selected by the NAIA Volleyball All-America Selection Committee.

Squiers earned second team honors and was also named the NAIA National Freshman of the Year, while Scanlan and Gillespie received honorable mention accolades. Squiers became the first Bruin ever to be named the National Freshman of the Year.

Squiers, who was named the AVCA North Central Region Freshman of the Year, set a Bellevue freshman record with 1,786 assists which was also good for the third highest single-season total in program history. Her assist total led the nation, while her 11.16 assists per game ranked sixth nationally.  Additionally, she ranked third on the team with 391 digs.

Squiers earned first team all-NSAA honors and was the league's Freshman of the Year. She was twice named the NAIA National Setter of the Week and earned NSAA Setter of the Week honors on seven occasions. Squiers led the Bruins with 17 double-doubles on the season.

Scanlan, who was named to the all-Region first team for the second-straight season, also earned her second-straight first team all-NSAA honor. Scanlan ranked second on the team with 399 kills and 2.75 kills per set while leading the team and ranking 26th nationally with a .326 hitting percentage on 886 attempts. Her 122 blocks ranked third on the team and 32nd nationally.

Gillespie was selected to the all-Region team for the first time in her career after previously being named a first team all-NSAA selection. Her 363 kills and 2.27 kills per set both ranked third on the team. Gillespie led all Bruins with 156 total blocks and ranked second with a .289 hitting percentage on 863 attacks. She ranked among the nation's leaders in both blocks (ninth) and blocks per set (1.03).

The Bruins finished the 2016 season with a 32-12 overall record, advancing to the NAIA National Tournament for the ninth time in school history.
