Two Bruin volleyball players honored by NSAA

MADISON, S.D. -- Two Bellevue University volleyball players have been recognized by the North Star Athletic Association in the weekly awards program for the week ending Oct. 23.

Junior middle blocker Mikaylah Gillespie and freshman setter Maddie Squiers have been named the NSAA's Attacker and Setter of the Week, respectively.

Gillespie hit an impressive .537 on the week as Bellevue swept all four of their opponents. IN BU's 3-0 victory at Peru State, she smashed 13 kills and hit .600. She averaged 3.5 kills per set and added 15 block assists on the week. On three occasions Gillespie recorded double-digit kill totals.

This is the first time that Gillespie is being recognized in the conference award program.

Squiers averaged 13.9 assists per set while directing the Bellevue offense to a .285 hitting percentage in their four victories. She added eight kills, 31 digs, and six blocks (one solo) on the week. Squiers accumulated 166 assists for the week, including 45 in the Bruins' victory over College of the Ozarks.

The award is the fifth of the season for Squiers who was previously honored by the league on Aug. 29, Sept. 5, Sept. 12, and Sept. 16.

The 21st-ranked Bruins have won five-straight matches (all via sweep) and are currently 23-8 overall on the season and 9-2 in the North Star. Bellevue plays a pair of conference matches tomorrow in Forest City, Iowa. Bellevue matches up against Waldorf at 3 p.m. and takes on #4 Viterbo at 5 p.m.
