Bruins keep it tight but fall short to #4 V-Hawks

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Despite being out-scored by just nine points in the match the No. 20 Bellevue University volleyball team was swept by No. 4 Viterbo University, 3-0, on Thursday evening in a North Star Athletic Association match at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.

The V-Hawks won the opening set 25-21 before battling back from six points down in the second to snag a 25-2 victory. The third set saw the score tied late at 24-24 before back-to-back points sent Viterbo to the 26-24 victory.

Viterbo won their 18th-straight match to improve to 21-2 overall (5-0 NSAA) while Bellevue now falls to 17-8 (5-2 NSAA) this year.

Viterbo's Natalie Geidel and Emilee Wiersma each recorded a match-best 13 kills while Amelia Grahn finished a kill short of a double-double ending the game with nine kills to go along with 37 assists. Sierra Skow added nine kills, Sara Biermaier contributed six, and Danielle Green chipped in five.

The V-Hawks out-hit the Bruins by a .241-.143 margin and out-dug the host side 59-48. Baylee Gross led Viterbo with 19 digs and Biermaier added 11.

Defensively, Bellevue out-blocked the visitors 10-5.5. Mikaylah Gillespie led the team with eight block assists.

Shayla Scanlan continued her strong run of play finishing with nine kills on a .300 hitting effort. Hope Lambrecht finished with seven kills against just one error and Pakalana Helekahi added eight kills for the Bruins.

Maddie Squiers finished a dig short of a double-double with 28 assists and nine digs. Taylor Holz led the Bruins with 11 digs while Lauren Colpitts dug nine balls for BU.

Bellevue with have eight days to regroup before they travel to Madison, S.D. on Friday, Oct. 14 for a 7 p.m. match against Dakota State.
