MAYVILLE, N.D. -- Behind double-figure kill efforts from Shayla Scanlan, Pakalana Helekahi, and Hope Lambrecht the No. 18 Bellevue University volleyball team took apart Mayville State University, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in a North Star Athletic Association contest at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
Bellevue cruised to victories in the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-16 before dropping a tight third set 25-21. The Bruins responded by claiming a 25-19 win in the fourth set to win the match.
With their eighth-straight victory BU improves to 15-5 overall on the year while advancing to 4-0 in NSAA play. Mayville State falls to 8-9 overall and dropped their first league game to fall to 2-1 in the North Star.
Scanlan (14), Helekahi (12), and Lambrecht (10) led an accurate Bruin offense that hit .263 for the match. That hitting percentage easily trumped Mayville State's .126 rate. Maddie Squiers directed the offense with 56 assists and chipped in with four kills.
On defense, Taylor Holz paced BU with 17 digs. Lauren Colpitts and U'i Kepani added nine apiece while Verenice Chaparro finished with eight digs. The Bruins out-dug the Comets, 57-53 as a team.
Chaparro and Addison Smith co-led the Bruins with a match-best three service aces. Mikaylah Gillespie had a pair of block solos and five block assists to lead Bellevue which accompanied her six kills. Michaela Gardner matched Gillespie with six kills of her own.
All 15 Bruins on the roster saw action in Saturday's contest.
Once again, Bellevue out-hit Mayville State in each of the three sets they won on the day. The Comets returned the favor by out-hitting the Bruins in the third set.
The Comets were led by Stephany Wold's 12 kills and Joely Christianson's 10. Megan Kolness added six to go along with a team-best 31 assists. The defensive effort was spread out with Jayden Warner and TaLise Hansen leading the way with 15 digs apiece. Sydney Boom added nine and Nicole Halverson contributed seven.
Bellevue takes a break from conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Crete, Neb. For a 7 p.m. tilt at Doane University.
