BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- The Bellevue University volleyball team salvaged a split on the second day of the Olivet Nazarene University Invite Saturday. After falling, 3-0, to Cornerstone University to start the day, the Bruins ended the tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Davenport University.
Bellevue moved to 11-9 on the season following the split. The Bruins have won six out of their last seven matches.
The Bruins will be idle until Monday, Sept. 28, when they return home to host No. 24-ranked Doane College at 7 p.m. at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
Cornerstone 3, Bellevue 0
The Bruins were plagued by 28 hitting errors and hit just .016 in the three-set loss to Cornerstone. Bellevue was led by sophomore Mikaylah Gillespie and freshman Shayla Scanlan, who both produced six kills in the loss.
Beth Walker recorded her team-leading 14th double-double of the season, finishing with 23 assists and 13 digs, to go along with a pair of kills and a block. Taylor Holz tied Walker defensively, collecting 13 digs. Victoria Bowens was also in double figures, notching 12 digs, while adding a kill and a service ace.
Cornerstone hit .098 as a team and was led by Ellie Van Laar and Johanna Egerer's 10 kills apiece.
Defensively, the Bruins held a 65-57 advantage in digs, but BU was out-blocked 8-4 in the loss.
Bellevue 3, Davenport 0
Rachel Wald led the Bruins with a match-high 14 kills on .276 hitting in Bellevue's sweep over Davenport in the tournament finale. The Bruins outhit the Panters .211 to .106 in the win.
Freshmen Marylyn Mozena and Scanlan added eight kills each in the win.
Holz paced the BU defense with a match-high 23 digs, while adding four assists and a pair of service aces.
Walker directed the BU offense with 36 assists, eight digs, five kills and two service aces.
The Bruins out-dug DU, 59-49, and also held a 6-4 edge in total blocks.
