Bruins finish Red Raider Classic with 3-1 loss to Doane

ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Despite recording more kills and Jordan Broady's second triple-double of the day, the Bellevue University volleyball team fell to Doane College 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17) in the final game of the Red Raider Classic Saturday afternoon.

The Bruins finished the tournament with a 2-2 record while the Tigers improved to 7-1 on the season.

Broady tallied 40 assists, 12 kills and 10 digs while Caitlyn Rueth recorded 12 digs and 11 kills. Sunny Bell led the Bruins with 13 kills. Sydney DeBoer pounded 10 kills and added four block assists. Libero Meghan Evans anchored the defense with a match-high 18 digs.

The Bruins trailed the entire first game after falling into an early six-point deficit, 10-4. BU battled back and got within one point of the Tigers twice (18-17 and 21-20), but were unable to get any closer, as DC ended the opening stanza by scoring four the final six points to win, 25-22. Bell paced BU with five kills.

BU once again found themselves facing an early deficit to open the second set, 7-3, but scored the next four points to tie the match at 7-all. The Tigers used a 7-3 run to regain control of the set and propelled DC to a 25-22 victory.

An early 5-1 BU run allowed them to take a 10-7 advantage in the third set. The Tigers responded by using a 7-4 spurt to tie the game at 14-14 before the Bruins ended the set by scoring 11 of the final 18 points to win, 25-21.

DC scored five the first six points before BU came back to take a 14-13 lead. But a decisive 12-3 run to end the match lifted the Tigers to the four-game win. The Bruins hit just .073 and were plagued by nine errors in the final set.

The Bruins will return to action on Wednesday, Aug. 29 when they travel to Fremont, Neb. to battle Midland University at 7:30 p.m.
