Bruins grab a pair of wins at York

YORK, Neb. -- The Bellevue University volleyball team won a pair of matches at York College Tuesday night in MCAC action at the Freeman Center. The Bruins swept the first match 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 and took the second 18-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-17.

With the two wins, Bellevue improved to 25-9 on the season and 11-1 in the MCAC. York fell to 10-15 overall and 4-6 in league play.

The Bruins were led in the first match by junior middle blocker Maureen Wardian, who collected 13 kills on .321 hitting, while adding four blocks. Junior rightside hitter Kali Schnacker added nine kills on .421 hitting and also notched four blocks. Junior outside hitter Ashley Wurdeman pounded eight kills on .333 hitting while adding three blocks and two digs.

The BU defense was led by senior Katy Gregory, who registered a match-high 15 digs. Freshman Andrea Johnson tacked on 11 digs.

Sophomore setter Jordan Broady directed the Bruin offense to a .188 attack percentage, dishing out 32 assists, while adding eight digs and four kills.

Wardian had seven kills in the opening set, hitting .500 with just one error in 12 attempts. Schnacker added three kills on .429 hitting. Leading 9-8, the Bruins went on a 6-0 run and led by as many as 11 points before cruising to the 25-17 win.

Bellevue rallied from a 12-9 deficit in the second frame and also trailed 17-16, before closing out the set on a 9-2 run.  Schnacker and Broady each collected three kills in the second set.

Wardian connected on five kills in the third set and the Bruins used runs of 6-0 and 8-2 to push past the Panthers, 25-17.

Match 2
Schnacker posted a career-high 21 kills while adding three blocks in the nightcap. Wardian added 14 kills and a match-high eight blocks.

Senior Katy Gregory collected a match-high 22 digs, while adding five kills and three blocks. Freshman Meghan Evans chipped in with 17 digs as the Bruins held an 87-74 advantage in digs.

Senior setter Kylie Davis posted her second double-double of the season with 44 assists and 10 digs, to go along with six kills. 

The Bruins hit just .045 in the opening set and never led. York built an early six-point lead, but the Bruins got to within two at 14-12 following a Schnacker kill. However, the Panthers went on a 6-1 run en route to the 25-18 win. Schnacker had six kills in the opening set.

Bellevue rallied from an 21-17 deficit in the second set, finishing on an 8-2 run highlighted by a pair of kills from Sydney DeBoer along with kills from Gregory, Wurdeman, and the clincher from Schnacker to give BU the 25-23 win, evening the match at one-set apiece. Schnacker's five kills paced BU in the second frame.

The third set featured 12 ties and five lead changes,. York served for the set at 24-23, but the Bruins tied it on a block by Schnacker and DeBoer. York's Chelsey Quigley thwarted the Bruins first set point at 25-24 with a kill. However, BU ended the game on Quigley's service error and a kill from Wardian. Schnacker tacked on seven more kills in the third frame, while Wardian added four kills.

Leading 11-10 in the fourth, a pair of kills from freshman Alannah VanGorder and Schnacker sparked a 9-2 to Bruin run as Bellevue raced to the 25-17 win. Fittingly, Schnacker pounded a kill on match point to secure the win. Wardian had four kills in the fourth, while Schnacker added three.

Bellevue will head to Livonia, Mich. this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22-23 to complete in the Madonna Crusaders Classic.
