Bruins split matches at Red Raider Classic

ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- The 17th-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Red Raider Classic, defeating University of Great Falls 3-1 (25-10, 16-25, 25-16, 25-22) before falling in three (25-19, 25-16, 25-18)  to 10th-ranked Taylor University.

The Bruins are now 3-2 on the season after going 2-2 in the tournament.

Junior middle blocker Maureen Wardian led the Bruins in the win over UGF, recording a season-high 15 kills on .375 hitting along with a match-high five blocks. Junior Ashley Wurdeman added 12 kills on .360 hitting with four blocks. Junior Kali Schnacker connected on 10 kills with two blocks.

Sophomore Jordan Broady dished out 39 assists and senior libero Katy Gregory paced the BU defense with 19 digs.

Jaclyn Thorson, Annie Benson, Wurdeman and Schnacker all had six kills in the loss to Taylor. Broady collected 25 assists, while recording five kills in seven attempts with no errors.

Freshman Megan Evans led the BU defense with 11 digs against the Trojans.

The Bruins will host the 12-team Bruin Labor Day Classic next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 3-4 at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center on the BU campus and the Lied Activity Center in Bellevue.
