Records tumble at Prairie Wolf Track Invite

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Three Bruin school records fell at today's Prairie Wolf Indoor Track Invitational hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan University at UNL's Bob Devaney Center featuring several Division III schools and Division I Creighton. Men's marks in the 1000, 3000, and 5000-meter runs went down on a great afternoon of racing.

Freshman Xavier Mallow smashed the existing school record in his first attempt at 5,000 meters by running to a second-place finish in the race and posting a time of 15:11.44, over a minute and a half under the old record. That time is currently the best among North Star Athletic Association runners.

Luis Casallas Vega captured the only individual race victory on the day as he won the 1,000-meter run, lowering his own record set a week ago with a 2:33.47 clocking, a full five seconds under the old mark. That ranks as the second-best mark in the NSAA.

The final record-setting run was turned in by Richard Marcoux at 3,000 meters as he reduced his own records by ten seconds, running to a third-place finish in 8:40.94. That time is also best in the NSAA. Also running in the 3,000 was Collin Kotz, who ran a season-best 9:23.58.

Mallow, Casallas Vega, and Marcoux are all among the top fifty times in the NAIA, with Marcoux at No. 32, Mallow at No. 44, and Casillas Vega standing at No. 46.

Finally, for the men, Jose Lara ran to a fourth-place finish in the mile run, recording a 4:33.72 time, while Alejandro Corona Martinez crossed the line in 5:12.39.

Alicia Rivera Camargo was the lone entrant for the Bruin women and turned in a great performance in the 1,000-meter run as her 3:28.04 was a lifetime best and moved her to No. 2 on the Bruin all-time charts.

The Bruins head to Crete, Neb., next Saturday, Feb. 1, for Doane University's Fred Beile Invitational as they march toward the conference championship on February 16 in Brookings, S.D.
