Late goal sees BU settle for road draw at Morningside

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Maju Serrano scored her first goal of the season for the Bellevue University women's soccer team on Wednesday evening in a 1-1 draw at Morningside University.

Both teams moved to 1-0-1 on the season.

The first half saw Bellevue twice find the post while the game remained scoreless at the break. Each team managed six shots in the period with Morningside putting three on goal to BU's two.

With the action picking up in the second half, Bellevue had a pair of great scoring looks on either side of the hour mark. Emma Madej pulled the Mustang goalkeeper off the line but saw her shot go wide of goal then, in the 61st minute, Maju Serrano beat the keeper with a shot but that shot found the far post narrowly missing giving BU a lead.

Serrano atoned four minutes later, giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead with her first goal of the season in the 65th minute. Claudia Gallegos sent in a cross that Ximena Jauregui flicked at goal off the keeper's palm and towards the waiting head of Serrano who calmly knocked in the goal.

Morningside won a penalty in the 70th minute but the spot kick soared over the crossbar and harmlessly out of play to see the Bruins hold their 1-0 lead.

The lead held up until the 85th minute when the Mustangs won a free kick off the corner of the penalty area. Keyera Harmon scored off the set piece to tie the game at 1-1. The linesman raised the offside flag but after a discussion with the referee, the goal stood.

Bellevue out-shot Morningside 15-12 for the game and 9-7 in shots on goal, collecting a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Isabel Ter Weeme made eight saves in net for the Mustangs and Alessia Ricciardi totaled six stops for BU.

Bellevue plays their home opener on Saturday, Aug. 26 when they host Tabor College (0-0-0) at 4 p.m. from Papillion Landing.
